Jeg kunne ikke have udtænkt en bedre slutning selv - Well done, my fellow writer!

"Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice's life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice's grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: "Stay away from the Hazel Wood."

Reading Hazel Wood has been such a special experience due to the fact that it isn't anything like other fantasy books about fairy tales. It's dark, cold and at times even scary, and can in no way be fully compared to regular fairy tale stories. Because of its dark elements, I wouldn't recommend reading it to small children, since I think they might get very frightened. I also think they will enjoy Hazel Wood a lot more, when they are old enough to read it on their own. But that's just my opinion, and I'm not trying to tell you how to parent, far from it. Which books you choose to read to your children is completely up to you. I just thought I would mention anyway.
However, I must say that Hazel Wood was refreshing for me to read, no doubt. I'm not completely blown away, though. This is due to the fact that I found the story kind of stuck from time to time. It felt like it was almost standing still, even though it wasn't, and some of my interest and excitement faded away when I read those parts of the book. Moreover, there were several times when the main character, Alice, behaved as if she was waaay younger than she actually is. She's 17, yet several times I found that she behaved and reacted the way a little child would. And since I didn't find any explanation or reason for it in the book, I find that it is disturbing the flow of the story.
That said, I honestly think that Hazel Wood is a wonderful debut novel, which Melissa Albert should be very proud of. It is clear to anyone that she definitely has a gift and a talent when it comes to writing. I wasn't at all expecting these dark, different and unique fairy tales, and I really liked the fact that Melissa Albert chose to write her own instead of just using or rewriting the fairy tales we already know. Well written and nicely done, Melissa Albert!
And what an ending! Throughout all of the last part of the book (Probably from page 200 or 220 and until the end) I was super excited and thrilled to see how the story evolved! The plot almost got wilder and wilder every time I turned a page! And it became harder and harder for me to put the book down every time I turned another page. Even though it was past midnight, I loyally kept reading, because I "simply had to read just one more chapter, which inevitably turned into several chapters, before I got so tired my eyes wouldn't stay open any longer.
I couldn't have thought out a better ending myself - Well done, my fellow writer!
A good piece of work like this must of course be celebrated with a beautiful set of stars, and I give it 4 shiny ones. Congratulations, Melissa Albert! I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for any future books of yours!
